 Desert Roses

“Desert rose” is the popular name given to crystalline concretions like this, which grow in sediments during the process of turning into rock. The crystals grow from a central point, and when the rock weathers, the “roses” emerge. Calcite forms these particular roses. Barite, celestite, and the clear variety of gypsum called selenite also form roses.
